Ruben Wiki is hoping to make it to Christchurch on Sunday to watch his daughter Mackenzie make her Kiwi Ferns debut, a milestone he says is difficult to talk about without getting emotional.
The former Kiwis captain told Sport Nation's Scotty and Izzy that Mackenzie had earned her opportunity after a standout season.
The Raiders NRLW winger was not named in the original squad but was called in following an injury.
“She had a stellar season this year and RLPA dream team of the year, the try of the year and scored 10 tries plus this year,” Wiki said. “So, she deserved the spot and I'm just glad she was ready to go.”
For Wiki, seeing his daughter pull on the same national jersey carries a special significance.
He said he had always encouraged her to represent their family, but stressed that Mackenzie had made the achievement through her own effort and ability.
“Her own merits mate, she's just been killing it and I'm very proud of her,” he said.

Her debut will also add to a family legacy, with Wiki saying three generations of his family have now worn the New Zealand jersey.
Adding to the special moment that is seeing his daughter represent the country.
“It's a little bit emotional talking about it - watching my baby on Sunday,” he admitted.
The proud father has shared advice along the way, but says he does not try to tell Mackenzie how to play.
He points instead to the work she has put into her game and the small details that have helped her earn this chance.
“She knows what it takes and she's watched her dad in the past. You got to do the little one percenters and work on your game,” Wiki said.
Mackenzie has also spoken to her father about making her own way in rugby league, rather than simply following in his footsteps.
“This is this is my journey,” Wiki said, recalling her words.
Wiki is now trying to get to Christchurch to watch the debut in person, although work could get in the way.
“Yeah I'm trying to get down there mate and you know working some OT so trying to get down here,” he said.
