Wounded Blues hold on to victory over St Kilda

Carlton will have some more injury concerns surrounding their players after their 15-point victory against St Kilda.
They managed to beat the Saints 77 to 62 in their Friday night clash at the MCG for Spud’s Game, with the Blues leading for the majority of the game.
But Carlton did have their struggles throughout the match, with four Carlton players suffering injuries and two of those players not returning to the game.
The first player to be taken off the field was Mitch McGovern.
McGovern had a collision with St Kilda Irishman Liam O’Connell, who collided with the defender in the stomach and chest.
Immediately after, McGovern would reach for his neck as he appeared severely winded from the incident.
He would continue to struggle breathing on the bench, which saw him subbed out of the match for Cooper Lord.
Footage would then later emerge showing McGovern being taken away in an ambulance with his wife Kirsten by his side as he was taken to the hospital to get scans.
Lachlan Cowan also came off the field and would not return.
It was then reported by Channel 7’s Xander McGuire that Cowan had suffered a hamstring issue at the end of the second quarter.
Half forward Blake Acres ran into issues with his shoulder in the second quarter.
It appeared that he dislocated it when trying to make a tackle on Jackson Macrae. But medical staff were able to resolve the issue in the rooms, and he was able to play the remainder of the match.
Nick Haynes had to come off the field for a concussion test. This was caused by St Kilda’s Cooper Sharman’s shin colliding with Haynes’ head and neck when he leapt for a mark.
The 2020 All-Australian was taken off the field for an HIA (Head Injury Assessment), which he passed and would return to the field of play.
Speaking after the match, Carlton coach Michael Voss would provide some updates on the injury status of his players.
“Cowan will have his hamstring assessed. He was a bit tight, so we didn’t want to send him back out there,” Voss explained.
“(McGovern) Gov, we’ll wait for the assessment in the chest area. I couldn’t give it a medical terminology right now.
“Blake had the shoulder that he was managing, and Nick got a kick to the back of his neck that he had to get assessed, which he was fine to return on.”
Carlton plays the Sydney Swans in Round 10, with the match being played on Friday night at the SCG.
