Would Haas attract more than $13m Brown as a free agent?

Parramatta’s Dylan Brown signing a $13 million dollar contract over 10 years has created some speculation within the NRL marketplace about the worth of some free agents.
One of the big names that could be available is the Brisbane Broncos’ star Payne Haas.
Haas’ contract is set to expire next year which means he will become a free agent on November 1st if no deal is agreed to beforehand.
Speaking on the offers that Haas could attract rival clubs, former Broncos’ player Andrew McCullough believes the prop will be a man in demand for the other 16 NRL clubs to sign.
“He’ll attract some big big numbers.” McCullough said on SENQ’s Breakfast.
“To me personally, he’s more influential than Dylan Brown if he went to a team, that’s my opinion.
“The way he would be in the engine room, the minutes he plays, the type of guy he is,
“That middle forward is rare in what he does, talk about halves being rare, front rowers actually lay the platform to begin with to allow those halves the time,
“There’s not too many of them (front rowers) getting around and I just believe he’s the type of player that can really set up a team.”
Haas has been a constant within the Broncos starting line up for the last six years which has seen him go on to represent NSW and Australia within the forward pack.
There are reports across multiple outlets that a deal between the 25-year-old and Broncos is imminent.
In spite of this there is still a chance another club could swoop in for his signature which would create an intriguing situation for the Broncos according to Corey Parker.
“This is the conundrum.” Parker said.
“You’re saying five to six years which was similar to Dylan Brown.
"He had five to six years at Parramatta, they needed a circuit breaker the Newcastle Knights so they went you know what we’ll go ten years on very similar money,
“If someone comes in like North Queensland for example and say Payne we want you for ten years and the Broncos only offered five, where do you go?”
It would not be a surprise if Haas decided to test the free agency market as he did in 2023 - a move which saw him resign at the Broncos for $3.6 million over three years.
Ian Healy would add in that the Broncos need to make sure that they don’t disrespect Haas with a below market offer.
“You’ve got to respect him in the market.” Healy said.
“They (Broncos) need to offer high money for six (years) and anyone who pays ten (years) for him need to that six.”
“I’m saying about $1.6 million.”
Payne Haas will feature in the Broncos line-up when they take on the Canberra Raiders at GIO Stadium next Saturday night.
