Boyd injury adds eerie twist to Metcalf saga

After a suspected season-ending ACL injury for star Warriors halfback Tanah Boyd, Sport Nation’s Scotty & Izzy pondered who could wear the No. 7 for Round 12 and beyond.
Last week’s announcement of Luke Metcalf signing with the Dragons left many including Scotty Stevenson wondering ‘what if’ Boyd encounters severe injury - only for that very scenario to play out in the eeriest fashion.
Metcalf led Dally M points in 2025, but suffered a season-ending ACL injury, also against the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium which prompted Boyd's promotion from NSW Cup.
Boyd has since been in career-best form, steering the Warriors toward success and forcing Metcalf to five-eighth on return.

However with only a bandage on Boyd's knee and no sign of crutches, Israel Dagg is hopeful that the injury is not as bad as initial reports have alluded to.
"The most encouraging thing for me was the fact that he was able to walk off the field, largely unassisted," Stevenson said.
Scotty & Izzy praised Te Maire Martin who with limited recent game time, stepped up to fill the hole Boyd left.
“You’ve got to reward performances and you cannot go past Te Maire Martin and the way he went about his work,” said Dagg.

Martin has spent years waiting his turn on the bench and it came during a game-chaning moment, where he managed to be in the right place, at the right time, scoring a try, assisting another two and kicking over 140m.
“When the teams huddled together, Tanah Boyd's gone down, they're all looking around going, 'oh my god, the unthinkable has happened'," Dagg recalled.
“And then Te Maire Martin just comes on, grabs the ball by a scruff of it's neck and just says 'follow me lads'.
“I can't really put it any more into words with Te Maire Martin, that was such an amazing performance from a guy that has had very limited rugby.
Sunday’s clash was the first time Martin has played since breaking his leg in the All Stars game in February 2025, aside from one NSW Cup appearance.

In a post game press-conference, coach Andrew Webster said “we’re not writing him (Boyd) off yet.”
And when asked about Metcalf, Webster said he’s unsure if he will be available for selection this week.
“He hasn’t done one rep of footy because of the bye and because of the whole contract negotiation for the last probably two weeks.

“We need to get him back to doing reps because we don't want to throw him back in and he gets an injury.
“He’d be eligible for selection as soon as he’s fit.”
He mentioned the great depth of players available to fill the void, including Luke Hanson and Jett Cleary, along with Martin and Metcalf if Boyd is ruled out.

Scans will determine the extent of Boyd’s injury, likely in time for Tuesday's 6pm team naming.
