Why the Broncos need to protect their 'conductor' to keep NRL premiership light alive
Matty Russell and Michael Carayannis were impressed by the performance of Broncos superstar Adam Reynolds on Thursday night.
Both, however, have concerns over his longevity after sustaining a suspected shoulder injury during the match which may leave him on the sidelines.
Reynolds had a stellar performance against the Bulldogs on ANZAC Day Eve with 511 kicking metres, a 40/20, three try assists and a try in the 42-18 win at Suncorp Stadium.
With his eight points from conversion, this sees Reynolds only two points behind second-placed Hazem El Masri on the all-time points scored list.
Speaking on SEN 1170’s Breakfast, Russell was in awe of the halfback’s performance to lead his side’s win against the top-of-the-table Bulldogs.
“He was in everything,” Russell said.
“He was the conductor, the little conductor making sure the Broncos were humming in the first half.
“But there’s an asterisk there because he picked up a shoulder injury.
“Shook it off once, had it come back another time.”
Reynolds appeared to have suffered a shoulder injury after his try in the 18th minute where his nerves went numb.
But he played on until the 75th minute when he aggravated the injury and was eventually subbed off.
Carayannis commented on Reynolds, noting his previous injury history.
“He’s had some nerve damage there to his neck,” Carayannis mentioned.
“Had that surgery over the off-season as well which has impacted that feeling.
“I’m not sure if it’s exactly in that same shoulder that he’s had that nerve damage before, but he has had it."
However, he believes that the shoulder injury may not be the worst-case scenario but thinks the Broncos should still be careful given how important he is to their premiership chances.
“Originally, the concerns were, looking at the mechanism of what he went down at, he dislocated the shoulder,” he added.
“But the nerve and the pins and needles, provided that the feeling comes back, and it did during the game is obviously a better outcome than a shoulder dislocation because you know that’s a ticking time bomb.
“But, and that’s the problem with Adam at the moment, isn’t it?
“There’s lots of buts around his body and his durability to get through the rigours of a season.
“And when Ezra (Mam) comes back, do they rest Adam a little bit to nurse him through the end because they need him at the back end of the year.
“He’s at the peak of his powers Adam Reynolds and if he remains injury-free and they can nurse him, I still think Brisbane can give this competition a shake.”
In the press conference, Reynolds acknowledged the injury but was hopeful that it wouldn't impact his season by missing games.
"It's pretty sore,” Reynolds said.
“It sort of went dead on me when I scored the try, pins and needles, and I got it pretty bad there on that last one.
"It's OK now, but we'll have a look at it when we get back.
“The last one felt pretty bad, worse than when I scored the try.
"We'll get back to the club and see what the medical staff say but my aim is to play every game."
