Why Dwayne Russell is expecting a “record number” of first-time All-Australians in 2025
Dwayne Russell thinks we could have a huge jump in first-time All-Australians in 2025.
The All-Australian team as we know it has been selected since 1991, where obviously every player selected was a first-time All-Australian.
Taking away those early years and looking closely at the last 10 years dating back to 2015, there has been an average of 10.5 first-time All-Australians make the team.
Broken down by year, there were 11 first-timers in 2015, 9 in 2016, 12 in 2017, 10 in 2018, 9 in 2019, 12 in 2020, 11 in 2021, 12 in 2022, 12 in 2023 and 7 in 2024.
With the 2025 season nearing, Russell named a couple of potential first-timers that he expects to make up a new group potentially in the teens from this campaign.

“This is a crystal ball that’s a long way out,” Russell told SEN Afternoons.
“This is a crystal ball that's a long way away, but I think we might be in for a record amount of first-time All-Australians this season.
“I reckon we're going to get a heap of guys like Jason Horne-Francis be a first-time All-Australian.
“Guys like Will Day I think could be All-Australian this year. So I think we're going to have a record amount of young guys come through and put their hand up for All-Australian this year.
“That’s a little crystal ball for you.”
The 2025 All-Australian team will be announced during the pre-finals bye which will take place between Monday, August 25 and Sunday, August 31.
