Why 'contending' Roosters need to take Cronulla scalp
Andrew Voss has placed the Sydney Roosters under pressure to claim victory against Cronulla to confirm their contender status.
After losing the likes of Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Luke Keary, Joey Manu, Terrell May and Joseph Suaali’i over the off-season alongside having Sam Walker sidelined with an ACL injury, the expectation around the Roosters was that they would finish towards the bottom of the ladder.
So far this season, Sydney has had a mixed bag of results. They have had positive performances which led to wins against Penrith and Brisbane. But they have also had abysmal losses to South Sydney and their season opener against Brisbane.
After these results, they they sit one game outside the eight with a 4-6 record.

While Voss believes that the Roosters losing six players to Origin will make winning tough for the Tricolours, a victory would help confirm that they can beat teams above them more consistently.
“They have a ready made excuse to lose this week and that is the Origin toll,” Voss explained.
“They lose players to Origin, Sharks have no one on Origin duty. So, that’s a tough card to be dealt isn’t it, at this time of year?
“So, the Roosters, this weekend will play their 11th game of the year. They are sitting 4-6 (with) ten competition points.
“Their scalps this year of those four wins; go back over them.
“When they beat the Panthers the first time we all said ‘wow’ but that was proven to be a bit of myth really. Because (the) Panthers cemented themselves as going nowhere near as good as what they’ve been.
“The win over the Broncos. The Broncos have been all over the place like…can’t say the saying, it used to be something to do with the crap. Their form has been all over the place.
“The win (on) Anzac Day. Dragons, (are) good but Dragons aren’t top eight, are they?
“And the other win they’ve had is the Dolphins who looked good last night (against the Bulldogs) but not top eight.
“So, their four scalps this year are sitting all outside the top eight and they're still 4-6.
“If they are to be any contenders this year and I seriously mean that; to be any contender this year…then the Roosters I feel need to come up with a big scalp and that’s tomorrow.”
The Roosters will travel to Gosford to take on the Sharks on Saturday night. Kick-off will take place at 7:35pm.
