"What were they thinking?": How Port have found themselves in the bottom-four

Premiership coach Adam Simpson has called the situation at Port Adelaide “a mess” believing that the only winner out of this situation is coach Ken Hinkley.
After finishing second last year, Port Adelaide’s season has been somewhat surprising despite losing Dan Houston during last year’s trade period.
While some had them sliding out of the eight, they currently find themselves well and truly within the bottom five teams with a 4-7 record.
With finals becoming increasingly unlikely for the Power, Simpson has been left to wonder why they decided to go through with the succession plan.
“It’s a bit of a mess,” Simpson declared on SEN’s Crunch Time.
“What were they thinking when they did this?
"Were they thinking, ‘this could be a poor year and let’s transition Carry (Josh Carr) in… there’s going to be a bit of adversity this year, we’re going to transition the list, just hang back mate, we’re going to shield you a little bit and then when once we get to the draft or whenever it is’.
“Or was it, we’ve got another tilt this year, we finished second last year. Let’s give Ken an opportunity to win one.
“So, this is the worst-case scenario I see and there’s no winners.
“The only winner would be Ken, I think.
“And I’ve been through this obviously. Not through a succession but when the end is near and you know it and it’s just when. Like their a two percent chance of making finals, let’s be real.
“The bye would have been a good time, but that time has passed.”
Given that they are on the bye, the Power won’t play until next Saturday when they take on the GWS Giants next Saturday at Manuka Oval in the nation’s capital.
