'We left out a bloody 80 Test veteran’: Barnes reveals weight of All Blacks axe

Neil Barnes says the new All Blacks selectors have rewarded season-long form, even when that meant making some seriously tough calls.
Speaking with Sport Nation's Scotty and Izzy, Barnes was clear that the squad was not picked on reputation alone. Form mattered. Consistency mattered. And in some cases, players had forced their way past established All Blacks.
“It’s not so much as the other player playing poorly as the other players actually producing more. And that needs to be rewarded.”
Barnes said the coaching group had looked beyond short bursts of form and focused on what players had delivered across the full Super Rugby season, with four fresh faces rewarded with selection.
“It wasn’t form in a couple of weeks. It was form for the whole season.”

That was the key theme. The door was not closed on experienced players, but incumbency alone was not enough.
“Those guys have had to work harder than the incumbents to get past them. If it was even, you’re probably going to stick with the tried and true.”
Then came the line that summed up the seriousness of the selection room.
“We left out a bloody 80 Test veteran for that opportunity. So you don’t do shit like that lightly.”
It was a strong admission from Barnes, and a revealing one - this was not change for the sake of change. It was a coaching group willing to make hard calls if they believed someone else had earned the jersey.
Barnes also pushed back on the idea that versatility was the deciding factor in some selections.
“You don’t have to have everyone versatile,” the All Blacks senior assistant coach said.
“If someone’s a specialist in their position, and they’re good at it, they’ll still get picked.”
