Wayne Hawkes on backing Octagonal and a $400k Kerry Packer bet
SENTrack favourite Wayne Hawkes joined Clippers and Tippers for episode two this year all thanks to Tyrepower and told some cracking stories that have never been heard!
While getting a cut at Barber on Southside, Hawkes recalled the time he got the inside word from his father on stable star Octagonal, and how it led to a massive bet for a young Wayne.
“I’ll tell you what I did one day; Octagonal won his first start and he came back in the Autumn running on the Saturday. We were at Crown lodge and Octagonal was first-up in the Todman Stakes which is the biggest lead-up to the Golden Slipper,” Hawkes said.
“(Dad) goes, ‘It will just win’. So what Wayne did was Wayne went down to the ANZ bank… Wayne withdrew $2000. Wayne had $1000 in the Todman… and then he had $1000 to win in the Golden Slipper at $16’s.
“He won the Todman at 8-1 so I was $8000 in. He ran second, should’ve won by a proverbial country shizenhousen and was 7-2 favourite back in the day.
“That was bittersweet… that was a good clippers and tippers one for you.”
When asked by Giddy Up’s Gareth Hall who he would have ride a horse he’s got good money on from his time in racing, Hawkes didn’t hesitate in selecting Darren Beadman.
Hawkesy then recalled a time Beadman got embroiled in a Kerry Packer bet that would make any jockey shake in their boots.
“One day it was the last at Rosehill. John Hawkes had knocked off about three winners and it came to the last where there was a horse called Press Agent,” he recalled.
“I’ll never forget this, he lived in box 106.
“Jack Ingham came down from his super box at Rosehill and said (to Darren Beadman), ‘Kerry (Packer) is upstairs, and he’s had $400,000 on Press Agent. Don’t get it beat.’
“(Beadman) caned it in half (but) it won by a you-know-what. Beadman got it over the line.”
You can expect more of this gold from Clippers and Tippers as Gareth is joined by a new guest every week!
Wayne spent his $50 this week all out on Gallo Nero in Race 5 at Doomben.
