WATCH: Motlop goes global for touching Jota tribute
Very little is going Carlton’s way after another horror defeat this time at the hands of Collingwood, but Jesse Motlop’s goal celebration at the MCG went global when it's meaning became clear.
The Carlton half-forward kicked a goal late in the opening quarter and promptly celebrated by sitting down crossed legged and pretended to play a video game.
Commentators were lost for words until being informed that it was in fact a tribute to Liverpool star Diogo Jota who was tragically killed in a car crash earlier this week.
The 28-year-old Premier League star was well known for his quirky goal celebrations and had previously celebrated in the exact same way as Motlop after scoring a 94th minute winner against Spurs in 2023.
“Those who know these things better than us are telling us the Motlop celebration is in tribute to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player who lost his life in a car accident yesterday,” Gerard Whateley said.
“That was one of his trademark celebrations.”
It was a touching moment in an otherwise horror night for Carlton who were beaten by 56-points.
The sport world was thrown into mourning on Thursday night when news broke that Jota and his younger brother Andre had been killed in a car accident after their Lamborghini went off the road and burst into flames.
It is understood the accident was caused by a tyre blowout.
The pair had been driving from Portugal through Northern Spain and were bound for a ferry port to return to the UK when the tragedy struck.
Jota has been advised not to fly because of a punctured lung for which he was receiving treatment.
