The Warriors have announced a unique partnership with the City of Logan in South East Queensland which will see the establishment of an elite pathways program into the NRL and NRLW.
Logan City Mayor Jon Raven made the announcement on Monday in conjunction with the Warriors and said the agreement would be beneficial for the Warriors’ rugby league program but also for the local community in Logan and its surrounding areas.
Warriors CEO Cameron George told SEN that he expects the initiative to grow in the ensuing years.
“The Logan City council approached us about 12 months ago,” George said on SENQ Breakfast.
“We had a close look at it. We get offered opportunities in Australia a lot and this one fit really well because of the significant Kiwi population in the region.
“We felt it was a good fit for us and the council were very genuine about the outcomes they wanted to achieve in the community space.
“If we can get two or three footy players out of there a year, then that’s great.
“Ultimately, we want the boys and girls to get out, play sport and connect with rugby league which will be great for Queensland rugby league and for us.
“We have facilities there, we have offices and we’ll work with local clubs with opportunities for elite pathways. The only difference is that it’s New Zealand Warriors branded.
“It’s also not where we start but where we finish. We want to build a legacy there in the long-term.
“We won’t be able to sign every kid that’s playing but we can give the best chance to do so.”
After a number of lean years during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Warriors rebounded in 2023 with a preliminary final berth and are currently entrenched in the top four.
George is adamant the Warriors are on the path to claiming their maiden NRL Premiership.
“When you have people committed to the jumper and the club, it makes life easier,” George added.
“We had a lot of people come and go in that (COVID) period.
“That all changed when we came home when we got the right people who were committed to their roles.
“Stability is now working in our favour (and) we deserve to be in the top four.
“Regardless of how we are winning, we are. I’m very proud of the boys and we have a very young team.”
The Warriors host the Gold Coast Titans in Auckland on Saturday.
