"Want to punch him": Did Patrick Voss go too far?
Is Patrick Voss the new Hayden Ballantyne?
Just ask Freo captain Alex Pearce who admits anyone that does not support the club would probably want to punch him, particularly after his showy antics against Port Adelaide.
Voss enraged fans with an antagonistic celebration after kicking his third goal of the night – which put his side five points ahead in the final term – running towards Power supporters and shushing them before weaving them goodbye.
He came close to being humiliated as the hosts jumped ahead momentarily before Pearce locked in the points for Freo to push the club into the top four with a last minute goal.
While pushing things close to the line, Pearce insists the cult hero’s cheekiness is important for the game
“Hopefully we can just escort him into the bus and hotel without the Port fans getting into him,” Pearce said.
“He’s good for footy, he’s a bloke that you love playing with. He brings so much passion and energy and he’s good for the game.
“He’s probably a bit like (Hayden) Ballantyne to be honest...most people that don’t go for Freo want to punch him, but we all want to kiss him.”
It was a huge win for Freo, who at one stage were 14 points down in the final quarter, and star midfielder Caleb Serong was less than impressed with his teammates’ antics given how close the match was.
“I don’t know about the wave, only a point up and still a few minutes left, he can put that one away I think,” he told Fox Footy.
Fremantle’s six-point victory puts them fourth on the ladder with clashes against Brisbane and the Bulldogs left this season.
