Voss: NRL must sanction Panthers trainer over controversial incident
SEN’s Andrew has called on the NRL to heavily sanction the Penrith Panthers and their trainer Corey Bocking following a controversial moment in Saturday’s golden point win over the Gold Coast Titans.
After trailing 24-0 at half time, the Titans scored five unanswered tries to lead 26-24 with seven minutes remaining. Titans playmaker Jayden Campbell was about to take his conversion to potentially extend the lead to four points but was interrupted when Bocking ran in front of Campbell prior to the kick.
Campbell would miss the kick which left the margin at two points. The Panthers then sent the game to golden point after Cleary slotted a two-point field goal and five-eighth Blaize Talagi would win the game for the Panthers with a long-range try in extra time.
Voss acknowledged that the incident was likely an accident but the Panthers had to be held responsible for a game-defining moment.
“Campbell was clearly upset about it and if he had has his moment again, he would’ve taken a bit longer on his reset of kicking for goal,” Voss said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“He didn’t go back to his complete routine.
“It was such a drama-filled day because the Gold Coast comeback was enormous. It was heart pounding.
“The crowd got very loud and in the commentary box, I was off my tree because I hadn’t seen anything like it.
“In a football sense, (the trainer incident) was an absolute disgrace.
“I do think it was an accident but I just can’t accept that.
“Has a trainer ever run in front of the kicker? I have watched over 1000 games of rugby league in my life and I have never seen it.
“I defend the referee in this instance as well because he would’ve had to make up a rule.
“The rule says a deafening player can’t interfere with the kick. It doesn’t say anything about a third party.
“There has to be action on this.”
The Panthers secured their eighth straight win and now sit one point outside the top four.
Penrith travel to Newcastle to play the Knights on Friday.
