Trade talk: The deal Silvagni is weighing up amid Pies interest

Carlton’s Jack Silvagni has genuine interest from Collingwood as an unrestricted free agent.
The 27-year-old has become a key player down back for the Blues this season despite currently being sidelined with a groin injury, and reports have suggested the Magpies have tabled a more financially lucrative offer than the Blues.
SEN’s Sam Edmund revealed that Silvagni has had a deal in front of him for months now, which remains unsigned, despite the offer being the best he’s ever received from Carlton across his decade and 128 games in navy blue.
“No one quite knows whether Jack Silvagni is staying or leaving, given the Collingwood interest is absolutely real,” Edmund said on SEN The Captain’s Run.
“But there are some pieces of this puzzle we can put together around Jack Silvagni, the third-generation Silvagni to pull on the navy blue.
“I love the father-son rule… but in this modern game, it is just as much business as it is footy.
“Silvagni has had a Carlton contract in front of him for months now, and that contract is the best deal he's ever been given at Carlton since arriving there via the father-son rule in the 2015 National Draft.
“It’s a decade in which he has struggled, whether it's been his fault, the club's or both, to cement a consistent position and play consistently.
“Now, he has that despite the injuries this year, and the Blues have recognised it (with an offer).”
According to Edmund, Carlton’s Silvagni offer is close to $700,000 a season over four years.
The Herald Sun is reporting that Collingwood’s offer tops that $700k mark. The report also suggested that Carlton wouldn’t budge on four years if the Magpies came over the top with a five-year deal.
“My understanding is it’s a four-year deal from Carlton worth close to $700,000 a season. So somewhere around $2.5 million over the life of that deal,” Silvagni said.
“But, as I said, it's a deal he's now had in front of him for some time, months now, and he hasn't signed it. So, who knows?
“He’s 27 years of age. It is hard to imagine him going to Collingwood for all the obvious reasons, but he'd be a very handy pickup.
“While he remains unsigned, I think it has to be considered possible.”
Given Silvagni’s unrestricted free agent status, he’s free to walk to any rival club that offers him a deal of his liking.
