Trade talk: Port star’s cheeky Butters message after re-signing

Port Adelaide star Miles Bergman turned his back on rival interest to re-sign with the Power until the end of the 2027 season.
According to reports, Bergman had significant rival interest in his home state of Victoria as multiple clubs chased the former Sandringham Dragon.
While reports linked multiple clubs to the 23-year-old in recent months, Bergman himself never really delved into what rivals were chasing him as he tried to let his footy do the talking and put his contract talk to the side.
Even though the family pull to return to Melbourne was there, Bergman is thrilled with the decision he’s made.
“I'm not too certain on that (who was interested), my manager was on top of all of that, but I do know there was interest,” Bergman told SEN SA The Run Home.
“My family is back in Melbourne, but at the end of the day, Port Adelaide feels like home for me now, and I love the decision I've made.
“I was very undecided (a few months ago), I hadn't put too much thought into it, I was really just trying to play footy and think about it later on.
“Then in the last few weeks, I was just really excited about what we’ve got for the rest of this year and the years going forward.”
Other reports also suggested Port Adelaide were willing to offer Bergman a long-term deal of longer than seven years to remain at Alberton.
Having only re-signed for two, Bergman will now enter free agency at the end of 2027 where he’ll again be faced with the decision to return home or stay put, although by then, Adelaide may be where he’s most comfortable.
“My manager discussed it with the club (taking two years over a longer-term offer), and it takes me to free agency and just we'll get to that decision when we get there and see what happens,” Bergman said.
“Family is a massive part of everyone's decision, and Meecah and I are starting to settle down. We're going to get married next year and then who knows about the next two years, but I’m really excited to be here, and we love the club.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if here (Adelaide) does become home.”
After securing Bergman, Port Adelaide’s attention will now turn to re-signing Zak Butters who reaches free agency at the end of next season.
Bergman himself even revealed that he cheekily told Butters that it’s now his turn to put pen to paper.
“I did give him a little word today, saying, ‘Mate, it's your turn. I've done it, it's all on you now’,” Bergman said.
“I'll make sure that a few of us get in his ear and really push him now.
“I’ve left him plenty of money, he’s got all of it.”
