Trade talk: Dermott Brereton’s left field trade suggestions
Could these out-of-favour players kickstart their AFL careers at a new club?
Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton has named a range of players struggling at their current clubs who might be willing to seek a move, citing five clubs that could use their services ahead of the 2026 season.
Speaking on SEN’s Dwayne’s World, Brereton kicked off with the Saints, recommending a potential recruit for all of St Kilda, Carlton, Melbourne, West Coast and Hawthorn.

“Who might come from left field and move and improve at their new club?” he said.
“St Kilda desperately need a tall – a 6’6 key backman. I’m thinking St Kilda go out and get Liam Jones for one season, to hold that position down while they cultivate a young player.
“Carlton needs to spend a little bit more than something like that – go out and get Ollie Florent, go out and get Jayden Hunt to run the lines for them.
“Melbourne should probably go to Collingwood, and they’ll pay bargain basement for it. Get a jumper in their forward line – get Ash Johnson.
“The West Coast Eagles, go and get Ed Allan from Collingwood.
“Hawthorn, if things don’t work out, I’d go and pick up the end bit of Dylan Shiel’s contract. Someone with explosive, tearaway pace to add to that midfield.”
