“Their words don’t match their actions”: Cornes takes aim at inauthentic Dees

Kane Cornes has taken aim at Melbourne after Simon Goodwin took part in a sit-down interview with the Herald Sun’s Jay Clark.
With the interview turned into an all-encompassing article, Cornes was a keen reader, and while he loved the access and insights given by Goodwin, he thinks that his responses were further proof of the Demons being ingenuous about issues and talking points in and around the club.
Cornes pointed to previous examples of Melbourne’s talk not marrying up to their actions dating back to former CEO Gary Pert and Goodwin’s interview with SEN’s Garry Lyon and Sam Edmund in late 2023 after the club crashed out in straight sets and tried to trade Clayton Oliver that off-season.
“I forensically studied the great piece with Jay Clark in the Herald Sun which was a sit-down with Simon Goodwin, which I thought was good and good access. I think more coaches should do that throughout the pre-season,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.
“But… and there is a but… do you think there a club in football whose words don't match its actions more than Melbourne?
“Do you think they actually believe what they're saying? Or are they saying that to try and fool us and also their supporters?
“This is from Gary Pert saying that it’s the ‘best culture in 40 years’, Simon Goodwin in the same sit down with Garry Lyon and Sammy saying, ‘We haven’t got a cultural problem’… do you reckon they believe that?”
Looking closer at the interview in the Herald Sun, Cornes took issue with Goodwin’s responses to questions about Kozzie Pickett and Clayton Oliver, questioning whether the coach and those at the club even believe what they’re putting out to the public.
“Simon Goodwin yesterday on Kozzie Pickett said, ‘He's going as well as anyone at the football club, and it's just showing everyone how engaged he is, he's as engaged as I have ever seen’,” Cornes said.
“Do you reckon texting Fremantle players saying he's going to play with them next year and liking social media posts linking him to Fremantle is as engaged as he's ever been?
“Simon Goodwin yesterday on Clayton Oliver, ‘It was certainly uncomfortable how things played out publicly last year, but Clayton is really aware of how much I love him and how proud I am of the journey he's been on, and just how much the whole club loves him, and how much we want him to be part of the footy club’.
“This is a guy you've tried to trade for two seasons in a row … I just don't think that their words match their actions.
“I don't think they're authentic and I don't even know if they believe what they're telling us.”
Melbourne begins their 2025 season with a Round 1 clash against GWS at the MCG on Sunday, March 16.
