Kane Cornes has pondered whether Hawthorn’s Cam Mackenzie could be gettable this off-season.
The 21-year-old former No. 7 draft pick was tactically subbed out of Saturday’s tight loss to Fremantle with just eight touches to his name. It’s the second time he’s been subbed off in his last four games.
As well as being subbed out, Mackenzie spent three games in the VFL in late May and early June, and Cornes questioned if his head could be turned by more opportunity and a better financial deal at a rival club.
“Cam Mackenzie is a fascinating player for me,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.
“If I were another club, I would be offering him a big contract.
“If Cam Mackenzie was at Essendon, Cam McKenzie was at Collingwood or wherever it is, dare I say at Geelong (he would be a great get).
“I don't know what's happened to him, but he was subbed out again, so there's an opportunity there, as there are for a number of Hawks players, to be picked off that I reckon aren't getting opportunities at the moment.”
As Finn Maginness made an instant impact when subbed on for Mackenzie, Cornes didn’t think it was the wrong call to make the move, and he doesn’t think the Hawks should be panicking much despite being only one win inside the top eight.
“Selection was interesting,” Cornes said.
“Maginness went forward, kicked a big goal, came on and took a nice mark.
“But I don't think it's panic stations for Hawthorn.
“11-6 after 17 games is a pretty good record, I don’t think they’ve improved, and I think teams have scouted them pretty heavily as we thought they would.
“But put Will Day and Josh Weddle into that side and they win.”
The Hawks have a tough run home to the 2025 season with their remaining games coming against Port Adelaide, Carlton, Adelaide (away), Collingwood, Melbourne and Brisbane (away).
