Gerard Healy has picked out the three most important statistics that AFL fans should keep an eye on in 2025.
Healy’s picks came after a caller on SEN's Sportsday asked the Brownlow Medallist to identify some statistics that a casual fan can look at to try and figure out what’s going right or wrong with their team in 2025.
While scoring and the win-loss record are obviously the most important markers of AFL footy, Healy’s main picks focused on the source of scoring and how to best slow the opposition from doing so.
Starting off with his two most important markers, Healy highlighted scores from turnover and forward half intercepts.
“Turnover goals are number one,” Healy said on SEN Sportsday.
“If you want to win the premiership, you’ve got to be in the top three for turnover goals.
“The closer you turn the ball over to the goals, the better chance you've got to win and that’s the front half game with forward half intercepts.
“So, they’re the two really important ones. The scoring from the turnover game and the forward half intercept game.”
Another statistic that Healy is fond of is the post-clearance contest and how often sides win the ball once it enters open play.
“I think post-clearance contest is a really important one,” Healy said.
“Forget the initial contest, once the ball is away from there, what happens to it? Do you keep control of it? If it gets into the contest, do you win it?
“That is incredibly important.”
The 2025 AFL season begins on Thursday, March 6 when reigning premiers Brisbane host Geelong at the Gabba.
