Trump appearance delays US Open final as Alcaraz downs Sinner
Thousands of spectators were left stranded outside Arthur Ashe Stadium before the US Open final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, as heightened security for President Donald Trump caused carnage.
The match was due to commence after 2pm local time (4am AEST), but Trump's appearance, which had been expected for the past few days, resulted in a 45-minute delay.
It meant that Sinner and Alcaraz had to continue their respective warm-ups as they patiently waited to step out on court.
"As a result of the security measures in place, and to ensure that fans have additional time to get to their seats, we have pushed the start time of today’s match to 2:30 pm ET," the official US Open X account wrote.
However, the final was pushed back by an extra 15 minutes.
Trump arrived inside Centre Court at 1:45pm, only to greet around 10 per cent of the crowd amid huge queue's outside.
The final was contested indoors due to rain, as Alcaraz won his sixth major crown in a four-set victory (6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4) spanning two hours and 40 minutes.
Alcaraz, 22, will reclaim the No.1 ranking for the fifth time.
"I wanted to start with Jannik. It is unbelievable what you are doing through the whole season," he said.
"It is a great level through ever tournament you are playing. I am seeing you more than my family and it is great to share the court, share the locker rooms, share everything with you, watching you improve ever day with great people around you.
"My team, my family, I am lucky. I (am) really lucky to have you guys, to be honest. The hard work you are making to make even better… I am really proud with the people I have around."
