Trade talk: Swans to ruthlessly pursue rival stars this off-season
Sydney are set to be a big player this upcoming trade period according to SEN’s Tom Morris.
The Swans, who have started 2025 4-7 on the back of a Grand Final appearance in 2024, are desperate to get back to the top of the ladder as quickly as possible.
The Swans hold all of their first, second, third and fourth-round picks in the 2025 draft and Morris is certain they’ll be ruthless and ambitious when it comes to acquiring star players from rival clubs.
He expects Sydney to target contracted players simply to see if they can turn the head of a star of the competition.
“Sydney is another big club that's under the microscope at the moment,” Morris said on SEN Breakfast.
“It is a well-known fact at Sydney that they're going to be unashamedly ruthless and ambitious at the end of the season from a player acquisition perspective.
“I don't know the names that they've got at the top of their whiteboard, clearly, that would be private information that's very hard to get a hold of.
“But everyone I speak to in and around the Swans, and player managers, tell me that they are just going to be ruthless.
“I'm not saying that there's going to be a Buddy Franklin-type situation where they swoop on another club and pick up someone from under the nose of another team.
“But I'm looking at contracted players and thinking, ‘Will the Swans just have a crack? Just have a throw at the stumps and see if they can hit’.”

While Morris doesn’t claim to know exactly who the Swans will target, he put forth some big names that are the type of players they could consider with big-money, long-term offers in the upcoming months.
“I'm not saying it's going to happen, but are they going to look at players like Charlie Curnow, would they offer a huge deal to bring him across?” Morris asked.
“Would they offer Ben King a massive deal from the Gold Coast Suns who has got a year to go on his contract?
“Aaron Cadman at the Giants has got a year to go on his contract. Harley Reid, are they going to be in for him?
“They've got good cash. They've set themselves up. The key is they don't want to rebuild, they don't want to go back to the start, and they don’t feel like they’re a club that can necessarily do that in their market.
“What they're keen to do is just go after big-name players and see what they can get. “
