Subsequent scans sideline De Goey as Daicos returns from foot concern
Collingwood star Jordan De Goey has suffered another pre-season blow with the midfielder sidelined with bone bruising.
While the 2023 premiership star will only be out of action for a week with the concern, it’s another setback among many he’s faced in the last 12 months.
After playing just 13 games in 2024 as he dealt with hamstring, groin and abdominal concerns, De Goey set off to Doha to get on top of his soft tissue injuries. While the player considered the trip a huge success, Seven’s Mitch Cleary says he’s still building up to full fitness.
As a result, Cleary foresees De Goey playing in more of a forward role to start the 2025 season as he slowly builds up his midfield loads.
“He left the track last week quite sore after copping a knee-on-knee collision, that was at Wednesday’s session and he didn’t train on Friday,” Cleary told SEN Whateley.
“I interviewed him last week and he said he was okay, but then he sat out yesterday and Collingwood tells me that he's had subsequent scans that have revealed bone bruising in the knee.
“So, he'll be sidelined for the next week, which wouldn't normally be too much of a factor, but when you look at what he's been through prior to Christmas it could be.
“He spent the best part of two weeks in Doha getting treatment on his groin injuries and he’s still not back to full fitness. In his own words, he’s building up his power still.
“I think we'll see Jordan De Goey, if he does play at the start of the year, playing more forward as he tries to build his tank, as opposed to going straight into the midfield.”

While De Goey hasn’t had a smooth run of training, the Magpies are looking relatively healthy elsewhere with Nick Daicos (foot) returning to full training as the injury list remains minor just over a month out from Opening Round.
“Nick Daicos has been back in full training now for two weeks,” Cleary said.
“He had that plantar fasciitis that he was dealing with in the first couple of weeks back post-Christmas, but he looks okay.
“Reef McInnes has just been sidelined … they’ve got Tom Mitchell still dealing with a foot injury, and Mason Cox's preparation's been a little bit limited.
“But all in all, from what I've seen at Collingwood, they've got most of their big names out on the track.”
Collingwood begins their 2025 season with an Opening Round clash against GWS at ENGIE Stadium on Sunday, March 9.
