Kiwi NBA veteran Steven Adams will be out of action for the foreseeable future.
Adams limped out of the Houston Rockets' win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday (NZ time) clearly in pain, unable to put any weight on his left leg.
Speaking to media on Wednesday prior to the Rockets' clash with the San Antonio Spurs, head coach Ime Udoka announced Adams had suffered a Grade 3 left ankle sprain and will be sidelined indefinitely.
Udoka said no timetable had been put on a potential return to play, adding the medical staff is seeking further information on the big man's condition.
Similar injuries have seen absences ranging up to 12 weeks, which would put Adams' approximate availability at near the start of the playoffs.
The Wellingtonian has been a front-court enforcer for the Western Conference fifth-seeded Rockets this season, leading the league in offensive rebounding with a per game average of 4.5.
Fellow veteran Clint Capela will be the likely candidate to take on a heavier workload in Adams' absence.
