'Snoop Dogg will be cancelled': AFL needs a new Grand Final plan
Will the AFL cancel Snoop Dogg as the Grand Final entertainment?
Take it to the bank, the deal will be called off this week, according to David Schwarz.
On the same day the AFL handed Izak Rankine a reduced four-week ban for making a homophobic slur, the American rapper made controversial and confronting comments about same-sex couples on a podcast - which SEN will not republish.
Snoop Dogg was also reportedly used as part of Adelaide’s defence of Rankine’s comments with the club suggesting it was a double standard for the AFL to contract an entertainer that has used similar slurs in his songs.
While Rankine’s defence ultimately came down to “medical submissions”, the raft of bad PR the Rankine and Snoop sagas have bought the AFL is significant.
Now, Schwarz and Herald Sun reporter Jon Ralph believe Andrew Dillon and co should be rethinking their Grand Final choices.
“Snoop is presenting on Grand Final day, the biggest day of the year for AFL,” Schwarz said on SEN's Point of View.
“It’s a controversial choice. In the week we have had with Izak Rankine, their Grand Final guest sails close to the wind, he doesn’t hold back, he is his own dog.
“I’ll make a statement here, he will get cancelled, he will not be presenting on Grand Final Day. Snoop will be cancelled this week and rightfully so. You can’t isolate a minority group.
“Everyone has condemned Rankine and then when you have our guest of honour making those comments, there will be big discussions.
“It’s reported he is being paid $5 million… you just don’t know what he’s going to do.
“Take it to the bank, he will be cancelled.”
Whichever way you look at the situation the optics for the AFL are not good.
While acknowledging that the administration should cancel their entertainer, Ralph isn’t convinced it will happen.
“You know what? They won’t do it (cancel Snoop) because they will think it’s great notoriety, but they probably should.
“We’ve had some headlines about things he’s said in the last few days which have been degrading to same sex couples which just shows you everything he does between now and the grand final will be analysed within an inch of its life.
“The optics are bad. They went for the razzle dazzle even though no one knows too many of his songs.
“(It’s the) the law of unintended consequences. The optics are bloody disgraceful.”
