Should West Coast be concerned about losing co-captain Oscar Allen as a free agent this off-season?
Brisbane is reportedly showing interest in the 25-year-old key forward as they prepare for life after Joe Daniher and Allen himself told reporters on Thursday that he isn’t sure what the future holds.
While the 93-gamer also said that he loves the football club and is sure things will eventually be worked out, Kane Cornes isn’t all that confident that Allen will remain in his home state beyond this season.
He discussed the restricted free agent’s future with David King on SEN Breakfast with King adding that he doesn’t expect Allen to leave West Coast unless the club are happy to let him depart.
Cornes: “Would you be confident if you were the Eagles, if you read this quote from Oscar Allen, who's their captain in terms of his future and he's been linked to Brisbane recently?
“He said, ‘I clearly love the football club, and I'm sure things will get worked out. It's probably not something that you really think about when you're playing. You're kind of just head in the sand, trying to get better and improve every day’.
“But this bit is what I noticed, ‘I'm not sure what the future holds, but I've really enjoyed and still enjoy my time at the football club’.
“Would you be confident that the captain is staying?”
King: “West Coast are not going to lose someone they don't want to lose.”
Cornes: “Are you saying they'd be comfortable to lose him?”
King: “Well, if they're comfortable to lose him, they'll play it out that way, and if they want to keep him, they'll keep him. I can't remember West Coast losing too many that they haven't wanted to lose.”
Cornes: “It's not a bad point. So, you think no one leaves the Eagles if they want them?”
King: “Well, people leave, but not usually the ones they want. Good footy clubs have a happy knack for knowing exactly what's required and who is going to take them there.
“If this guy's wavering and they think he's maybe not the answer, maybe they say, ‘Ok, let's get the best deal done’.”
Allen missed 14 weeks in 2024 with a persistent knee injury but kicked 53 goals from 23 games in a strong 2023 season.
