Should Pezet leave Storm for an ‘outrageous’ offer?

Should Pezet leave Storm for an ‘outrageous’ offer?
Matty Johns and Denan Kemp have debated whether Jonah Pezet should leave the Melbourne Storm following Jahrome Hughes' re-signing.
Signing with the Victorian club in 2021, Pezet was viewed as another talented junior who would provide the Storm with depth in their halves.
Debuting in 2023, Pezet played 10 games for the Storm in the last two seasons, featuring either as a halfback or five-eighth.
This season, he has only played in three games, which were all starts from the bench.
There is a possibility that he could get more game time now that Hughes has been sidelined till at least the end of the home and away season.
But in Thursday night’s clash against the Parramatta Eels, it would be Tyran Wishart filling Hughes’ starting position, with Pezet once again starting on the bench.
This has created a situation where the talented young halfback who is contracted to the Storm until 2029 may look for an opportunity elsewhere, given he has a clause that allows him to do so if Hughes did re-sign.
Speaking about his playing future, Johns felt that the 22-year-old was talented but was unsure whether he warranted the price tag that has been reported.
“Jonah is very much at the moment, all on potential,” Johns told SEN’s Morning Glory with Matty Johns.
“He’s gone in there and played a couple of good games, and he is a player of talent.
“But I’ve heard figures of 750 (to) 800 grand a year.
“That just highlights the supply and demand as far as halfbacks are concerned.
“I see him at about five (hundred grand a year).”
Denan Kemp also felt that offers for Pezet that were above $500,000 is outrageous.
“I think 500 (grand) is a fair deal,” Kemp added.
“I mean, I think 750, 800, that’s outrageous. No knock on Pezet because he’s not the one forcing that kind of money being thrown around.
“The question he has to face is that there was a pretty big offer from the Knights last year, he turned it down to extend with the Storm.
“And I’m just going through the teams and there’s not that many teams that are actually looking for a seven of his stature outside one or two.”
If Pezet is to leave the Storm, Kemp believes that Pezet would be best suited to play for the Red V of St George Illawarra. So long as coach Shane Flanagan would allow that by moving Kyle Flanagan to a different position.
“I think the real landing spot and whether Shane Flanagan does it or not, but I reckon it’s the Dragons,” he explained.
“I think that is the most likely spot where he could fit. The CEO (Tim Watsford) has come out and said that they are looking for a seven.
“I just wonder if Shane Flanagan will actually move Kyle (Flanagan) from that seven jersey.”
Johns feels, however, that the Cowboys would be the best fit for Pezet.
“It’s interesting with the Cowboys, they have really struggled to find the perfect partner for Tom Dearden,” Johns said.
“They’ve tried Jaxon Purdue. It didn’t quite work. He might just be six months away from being able to fill that role.
“They’ve (tried) a little bit with Jake Clifford here and there, who’s done quite well.
“I just wonder if Dearden can go to six and Jonah can go to seven just to revamp their roster and attack a little bit.
“The Cowboys for me are the sleeping giant.”
