Should expectations for Harley Reid in year two be tempered?

Kane Cornes believes people should somewhat temper their expectations for Harley Reid in his second season.
The former number one draft pick showed signs in his debut season that matched the hype that accompanied him before the draft.
However, a largely interrupted pre-season coupled with Cornes’ belief that that Reid is yet to master the training standards necessary to become an elite AFL player has him believing it could be a quieter 2025 for the Eagle.
He discussed the situation with Sam Edmund on SEN Breakfast.
Cornes: “Will Harley Reid have a severe case of second-year blues?”
Edmund: “Nup.”
Cornes: “I don’t like what I’m hearing.”
Edmund: “What are you hearing?”
Cornes (Reading): “Leg issue hits Reid, Harley Reid’s stop-start pre-season has continued with the young star missing training on Monday as he continues to deal with a lower-leg complaint. Reid didn’t complete training on Friday and was forced from the track midway through match sim with discomfort.”
Cornes: “They released an update saying it’s not too serious, but he has had an interrupted pre-season and to me, this guy needs to train and train with consistency and needs to build the habits that are required to be the superstar that we all hope he gets to.”
Edmund: “What player doesn’t need to train consistently?”
Cornes: “I think Harley Reid needs to learn how to train. Why is his body letting him down? Has he done the work? Is he prepared? Does he have the elite habits that are required? Is his body breaking down for reasons within his control? These are all questions that we can’t answer, I’ve got my suspicions…”
Edmund: “Do you think he doesn’t put in the work?”
Cornes: “Yeah, I don’t think he is yet. And that’s fine. He’s 19. I don’t think he’s yet training at the level that is required and is not living to elite standards that some other players are – but that’s okay, some players take five or six years to get that. I hope he gets it sooner. Just temper your expectations I reckon of what Harley Reid is going to deliver (in 2025).”
Reid was assessed for a sore lower leg following match simulation last week, an issue he has seemingly been dealing with since November.
