βSettle him downβ: King and Cornes debate Perkins form
SENΒ β’ Β July 18th, 2025 10:43 am

David King and Kane Cornes have vigorously debated the recent form of Essendonβs Archie Perkins.
The no.9 pick from the 2020 draft has struggled to impact consistently in season 2025.
Perkins had 16 disposals in Thursday nightβs 48-point loss to GWS but his impact was not where some expect it to be.
The 23-year-old has been moved around and used as the sub while also being subbed off of late, making it difficult for him to fully find his footing in Brad Scottβs side.
On SENβs Fireball, King and Cornes debated the situation surrounding Perkins.
Cornes: βHe had an unbelievable opportunity last night. Starts in the centre bounce.
βBombers fans have been asking why donβt you play Archie Perkins on-ball? He started pretty well, had a couple of touches early.
βBut his contest stuff is so far off the mark. Thereβs a lack of energy and urgency.
βLittle things like when you need to put your head over the footy, pick it up, donβt try to toe-poke it forward. I see too much of that.β
King: βHeβs out of confidence.
βWhyβs he doing that? (Because of a lack of confidence).
βSo get him going.β
Cornes: βHeβs starting centre bounce. What else do you want?β
King: βIf you keep telling someone theyβre no good, starting them as sub, subbing them out, dropping them, theyβre going to be no good.β
Cornes: βWhat if theyβve just moved past him?β
King: βThey havenβt moved past anyone. Have you seen how theyβve been going?
βSettle him down.β
Cornes: βYou think if heβs going any good he wouldnβt be playing in the side every week?β
King: βHeβs got a role to play.
βTheyβre throwing him around that much that how can you have any real continuity?
β30% mid, 70% forward. 40% mid, 60% forward. 60-40, 100% forward, 50-50, 20% mid, 40% wing.
βSettle him down! Some players canβt handle that (being thrown around).β
Cornes: βIf thereβs a ball there to be won, just put your head over it and pick it up.
βHeβs not thinking about, βOh gee, Brad is playing me forward, oh now Iβm midfieldβ.β
King: βOf course heβs not, but heβs out of form because heβs being thrown around.β
Cornes: βThe footy is there - put your head over it and win it.β
King: βI get that, but you only play instinctive footy like that when youβre seeing it well, when youβre on and ready to go, when youβre in good form.
βPlayers play differently when theyβre in good form to when theyβre struggling. Absolutely they do.β
Cornes pondered whether Perkins might benefit from a fresh start elsewhere.
The conversation morphed into Essendonβs overall drafting in recent years which includes the names of Ben Hobbs, Nik Cox, Zach Reid and Elijah Tsatas, among others.
Cornes: βDoes he (Perkins) need a change of scenery? Does he need a new club?β
King: βEssendon canβt afford to lose him. He has to be a product for them going forward.
βTheyβve got too many high draft picks that theyβve got question marks on. Whatβs happening with Hobbs, whatβs happening with Perkins?
βCox is probably not going to be there. Whatβs happening with Reid? Tsatas?β¦ The pressure is enormous.
βSurely theyβre all capable AFL players.β
Cornes: βUnless theyβve completely butchered their drafting.β
King: βGot them all wrong you reckon? Every high pick?β
Cornes: βThey didnβt get Reid wrong. Clearly his body has been a factor there.β
King: βSix out of seven they got wrong?β
Cornes: βItβs looking that way. They havenβt got it right.
βIβm not saying they canβt have a role to play in this side moving forward, but theyβre not going to be stars of the competition, are they?β
King: βI think itβs too easy to give up on them.
βWhy canβt he (Perkins) play half-back? Play Mason Redman at half-forward for a while.β
Cornes: βWhenever he plays heβs got to improve his contest and his intensity.β
