Ladbrokes Hobart Cup weekend has arrived with two brilliant days of racing beginning on Friday afternoon. While Friday is often labelled ‘Derby Day’, it’s the Group 3 Mystic Journey Stakes that is the headline act, with a full field assembled.
The rail is true for Friday’s card as has become the norm for this weekend, with a fine weather forecast.

Race 6 – 4. Zewinna
The grey mare is flying this preparation, finally cashing in on her good form with a dominant win at the track and distance in a similar grade last start. She loves racing in Hobart and has a favourable racing pattern where she generally races up near the speed. I have this as a race in two between her, and Dayan Star, with Zewinna as a narrow favourite.

Race 3 – 1. Just A Needs
Just A Needs turned her form around last start with a win at the track and distance, her third over the Hobart 1400m. She stays in class 5 company but actually gets in with 0.5kg less this start. Lovin’ Bev will stretch the field out, but she’s not the same horse in Hobart as she is in Launceston, which could leave the door open for Just A Needs to run past her in the straight.

Race 7 – 4. In Her Stride
The two local 3YO fillies, Geegees Mistruth and Ms Tasmania rightfully dominate the market, but Victorian visitor In Her Stride looks well over the odds. She came down for this race two years ago, in a complete forgive run. She flies fresh, the stable has won this race before, and her jumpouts leading into this race have been excellent. This looks like a target race, and I think at $16, she’s double the price she should be.
