SENTrack: Devonport Cup Day Best Bets

The crowds will flock to Devonport on Wednesday for 2025 Ladbrokes Devonport Cup Day.
It’s a nine-race card with the Ladbrokes Carpet Charge adding a secondary feature event to the meeting.
Race one is scheduled for 13:00.

Race 5 – 5. Likeakalix
Likeakalix entered this prep with big wraps after a huge debut run back in June, and he’s largely lived up to the hype, despite only winning one of three. He was the best sectional closer on the program’s last start, with the winner, Tuskegee, controlling things from the front. They meet again here, but Likeakalix meets him 1kg better, and there looks to be more pressure in the race on paper.

Race 7 – 7. Durazzo
Durazzo has been a huge firmer ($4.40 - $2.50) in the Carpet Charge and I’m not surprised. A winner at five of seven career starts, Durazzo has consistently run good times, and this race has been his target since he missed a start as an emergency in the Newmarket at the start of summer. Drawn ideally to stalk a hot speed with Newitt going aboard on the minimum weight.

Race 8 – 2. Swoop Dog
I think the 2023 Cup winner, Swoop Dog, is over the odds in the big one again this year. He was a massive run in defeat here last year with 60kg, and has 3.5kg less this year, primarily because he hasn’t won in almost two years. He had his chance in the Longford Cup, but ran well, and that Longford Cup/Devonport Cup setup is a proven formula for the horse. It’s hard to see him not running well and the market has overlooked him a bit.
