Sattler's plan to re-align Titans with the community
New Titans director of football Scott Sattler has opened up on his goal to re-align the Gold Coast Titans with its community, bolstering the connection between the two.
It was announced yesterday that Sattler, a host on SEN 1170 Sportsday and the inaugural Titans General Manager, would take over as director of football at the struggling Gold Coast club.
Sattler was announced along with new coach Josh Hannay, who will look to elevate the Titans off the bottom of the ladder.
Sattler believes one of the first things to achieve under the club’s new direction is building the connection between the club and the surrounding communities on both sides of the border.
“It was a shiny new toy back in 2005 and obviously the landscape’s changed a lot now and based on success and lack of it for a period of time,” Sattler said on SEN 1170 Sportsday.
“We know there’s bones there that can be built on.
“We know that there’s an exciting team that can score points and now it’s about getting a mentality in a playing group, under different guidance and different leadership to see whether that’s a missing link.
“The community is very important in any rugby league side, but probably more importantly in a one team town… having a deep connection with the community is really important.
“Walking around the streets for a number of months and years now… there’s not a tangible (connection), it doesn’t feel as though they can reach out and be part of the team so we’ve got to re-align that.
“Northern New South Wales is really important to the Gold Coast Titans as well; Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour, all the way up to the border at Tweed Heads is really important as well.
“It’s a big job but it’s an exciting one!”
Scott Sattler also revealed how he got the role, expressing how he’s eager to carry on the legacy of his late father, John Sattler, in bringing success to the club.
“It's something that came very, very late over the last sort of 24 to 48 hours but I’m deeply honoured,” Sattler said on SEN 1170 Sportsday.
“I feel sorry for a coach like Des (Hasler) or any sort of coach that loses their role but in saying that (I’m) really excited about what we can put in place.
“I've got a good relationship with the Frizells… I have a good relationship with Steve Mitchell… over time, they've always asked me for some honest advice about things from someone on the outside who's still involved in the game at an external level and I've always been happy to give my advice.
“After the game on Saturday night, I received a call and then proceeded to have a couple of meetings through Sunday.
“Seeing the (impact of the) passing of my father two years ago, he started the Gold Coast Giants in 1988 and there’s part of me that says there’s unfinished business for the family.
“I’m excited.”
