Pies set to rest list of stars ahead of Round 9 trip to Fremantle

COLLINGWOOD will leave some of its biggest names behind when it flies west to take on Fremantle this Thursday night.
The Pies sit second on the ladder after a 5-2 start to the season, but are poised to take a conservative approach to a Dockers road trip that comes just five days after a loss to Geelong.
In a plan that has been weeks in the making, Collingwood will shuffle the magnets with an eye to the rest of the campaign.
At least four established names will stay in Melbourne, with Scott Pendlebury set to be managed for the first time since he was made sub in Round 1.
Jordan De Goey is also likely to miss, with some thought even being given to sending the matchwinner away for a multi-week conditioning block to fast track his path for full match fitness.
Important and influential forward Brody Mihocek is also a chance to be rested, with Charlie West likely to make his AFL debut against the likes of Alex Pearce and Brennan Cox.
Jeremy Howe returns from a rest, while Ed Allan, Lachie Sullivan and Oleg Markov were all held over from Saturday’s VFL match against Footscray.
Pies coach Craig McRae hinted at the selection surprises after the narrow loss to the Cats on Saturday night.
“Watch this space this week. We’ve been a bit deliberate with that,” McRae said.
“Five-day breaks are hard, every team has to do it, it’s a challenge, you’ve got to think ahead.
“You’ve got to stay in the moment, but you’ve got to plan for five days and the travel to Perth and we’ve been doing that.”
