"Pay him $4m": Worrying sign NWM won't stay at St Kilda
Nasiah Wanganeen Milera is no guarantee to stay at St Kilda next season despite his Sunday afternoon heroics at Marvel Stadium where he produced one of the most incredible individual displays to kick an after-the-siren winner against the Demons.
The Saints had trailed by 46 points at the final break but nine unanswered goals together with Wanganeen Milera's incredible performance produced indescribable drama in the final game of the round.
It was the biggest three-quarter-time comeback in the history of the AFL and VFL.
But the elephant in the room remains the fact that the 22-year-old is unsigned next year and interest from rival clubs will only have spiked in the last 18 hours.
“You can’t (let him go),” Alistair Lynch said on SEN Tassie Breakfast. “If he walks out the door then pull down the roller behind him. It would be a huge void if he goes.
“You start the season with hope, then you see some young players come though at the club. At the top of the pile is this young man.
“If he got to the stage that if he walks out the vacuum of hope will leave fans devastated.
“It didn’t fill me with a heap of confidence that he will stay.
“It was a huge win and he was rapt, but in the hours after the game there were a few comments (from St Kilda), they’re certainly not confident they have got him.
“I hope he stays. He will be a great player wherever he goes but he is a shining light for St Kilda.”
Speculation over Wanganeen-Milera’s future with the Saints has been ongoing for much of the season.
There are reports he has been offered $1.2 million to remain at Moorabbin on a 10-year deal, but what happened at Marvel will surely see that number inflate by some margin.
With the Saints reportedly ready to throw $1.7 million at Tom De Koning, there’s a bigger cheque needed for their man Wanganeen-Milera and he needs to be the priority.
“He is 100 per cent the priority for St Kilda,” Lynch continued.
“If you land TDK, and they’re offering well and truly overs, you shouldn’t pay that much for a ruckman and that’s not being disparaging but you shouldn’t pay that kind of money for a ruckman.
“At 22 years of age, he (NWM) is a generational talent and in big moments he stood up. He cannot possibly go out the door so you make something work.
“Set him up with business networks and make sure he has opportunities moving forward. This is more than just a contract this is about setting him up with life after football.
“He needs good people around him and the club as to offer extras.”
Even his peers think he’s worth the big bucks.
“Pay him $4 million!!!!” ex-Lions skipper Tom Rockliff posted after the siren.
“Harley Reid about to be the highest paid player ever – for about 48 hours. Pay Nasiah!!!” premiership Hawk Xavier Ellis tweeted.
“Give him the chequebook and let him fill it in himself. Years and money. My gosh,” Dal Santo said on Fox Footy.
