Panthers send warning shot with Broncos' demolition in Brisbane
The Penrith Panthers have sent a warning to the rest of the NRL with a commanding win over the Broncos; doubt us at your peril.
The four-time premiers walked into Suncorp Stadium languishing in last, a position no one expected to see at the start of the season, and coming up against a Broncos’ side who had piled 42 points on the Bulldogs the week before.
However, Nathan Cleary and his side turned back the clock to the prime of their dominance, smothering the Broncos with a steadfast defensive display and a perfectly in sync attack.
Cleary was back to his best, with a try assist, a 40/20, two line breaks, 615 kick metres, and a try remarkably similar to his match-winner in the 2023 decider against the Broncos.
Speaking on Fox League, SEN 1170 Breakfast host Greg Alexander was impressed with the Panthers’ response to their disappointing loss to the Sea Eagles last week.
“They had to win against Brisbane or their title defence was in real trouble,” Alexander said.
“It was two steps back last week against Manly so there was a lot of pressure.
“Their defence was just outstanding.”
The win sees Penrith move out of last position with their third win of the season, while the Broncos slip out of the top four.
Panthers’ fullback Dylan Edwards impressed in the contest, running for 174 metres, as he battles with Roosters’ captain James Tedseco to keep his NSW fullback jersey, despite Tedesco being “at his peak”, as described by Alexander.
“Edwards is the incumbent… I don’t know what else (he has to do),” Alexander commented.
“Everyone’s form has been down, but you can’t fault what he’s done.”
Brian To'o will likely return next week in a major boost to both the Panthers and NSW Blues.
