Panthers purr to continue win streak as Souths injury crisis worsens
The Penrith Panthers have now won six games on the trot as they continue their charge up the ladder with a 30-10 win over the South Sydney Rabbitohs at Commbank Stadium on Friday night.
And to think, after Round 12, the Panthers were sitting at the bottom of the ladder with a 3-1-7 record. Now, after yesterday's win, they sit sixth.
It was a dominant display by the Panthers with their running game proving too strong for the Bunnies, with interim captain Dylan Edwards leading the way with 305 run metres, which saw him score two tries alongside a try assist.
Despite the margin, it would take until the 13th minute for either side to score, with the Panthers’ Paul Alamoti jumping on the end of his own kick to get the ball rolling for Penrith.
But once the reigning champs got started, they didn’t stop scoring another try two minutes later through Edwards, with Casey McLean scoring with four minutes left in the first half to lead 18-0.
While Souths did get the first score of the second half, it would not stop the Panthers as they scored two more tries to put the game beyond doubt.
South Sydney would get the last score, with Alex Johnston now only needing six tries to beat Ken Irvine’s record.
Speaking post-game, Penrith coach Ivan Cleary would keep his thoughts on the game brief and simple, believing that the Panthers played well but could have scored more.
“It was solid,” Cleary said with a deadpan expression.
“It was solid without being brilliant. I thought we left some points out on the field out there.
“That’s pretty much how I would sum it up.”
For Souths, their injury crisis only gets worse with Keaon Koloamatangi coming off the ground during the 52nd minute with an ankle injury.
His injury only adds to the growing injury list at the Rabbitohs as they are already missing Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Jayden Sullivan and Cam Murray amongst others.
