Overs, unders or evens: Where your club ranks after eight rounds
A third of the 2025 AFL season is behind us and with that comes some reflection.
Where is your club at after eight rounds? Have they met pre-season expectations? What is their reality right now?
West Coast premiership coach and two-time North Melbourne premiership player Adam Simpson, along with SEN’s Gerard Whateley, assessed each of the 18 clubs eight rounds in.
“Are you overs? Are you about where you thought you’d be? Or are you unders?,” said Simpson on SEN’s Whateley.
Read their thoughts below:
Overs
Brisbane (7-1, 1st)
Simpson: “As much as they won the flag, they’re 7-1 (already). I’m giving them overs.”
Whateley: “Chris Fagan clearly thinks the Lions are overs.”
Collingwood (6-2, 2nd)
Simpson: “At 6-2 they’re overs.”
Whateley: “Collingwood were an open question coming in.”
Gold Coast (5-2, 4th)
Simpson: “It doesn’t matter who they’ve played but Gold Coast are 5-2. I think they’re overs.”
Whateley: “Gold Coast have rarely been in this position historically and they’ve got two weeks to anchor that down.”
Adelaide (5-3, 5th)
Simpson: “They didn’t play finals last year and they’ve played a lot of home games but it doesn’t matter, they’ve still got the wins in the bank.”
Whateley: “I totally agree on Adelaide who have risen.”
Western Bulldogs (5-3, 6th)
Simpson: “I think we all agree that the Bulldogs have overachieved to what we thought at certain stages last year and early this year.”
Whateley: “Square with the ledger was fine for the Bulldogs, so they’re roaring along.”
Essendon (4-3, 11th)
Simpson: “I think Essendon would be happy. They’re 4-3 with one game in hand. What we were hearing at the start of the year was messaging around a rebuild.”
Whateley: “I agree on Essendon. The rider with them is the narrow wins over West Coast and North Melbourne, which had to be wins, that probably tells you where they are. But they’re in a good place.”
Richmond (2-6, 16th)
Simpson: “I think they’d be quite enthused by what they’ve done. They’ve only won two games but I think it’s two more games than we all thought.
“I think Adem (Yze) has done a really good job because they’re playing with spirit and they play with fight.”
Whateley: “Totally on Richmond. If they pick up wins as regularly as they have through the first eight rounds, they’ll finish with six and we’ll go ‘big salute for six’.”

Evens
Hawthorn (6-2, 3rd)
Simpson: “This might be a bit harsh because they’re third on the ladder and 6-2. I think with what they were building last year - and they wouldn’t be totally happy with their form - but they’ve banked the wins.”
Geelong (5-3, 7th)
Simpson: “I’ve got Geelong, same as you, at par/evens.”
Whateley: “They’re par (where we thought they’d be). And not the way they might have got there, but that’s where they are.
“You would expect them to be ahead of the ledger.”
St Kilda (4-4, 10th)
Simpson: “They may have overachieved maybe by a game but I saw them about 10th at the start of the year and they’re 10th at 4-4.”

Unders
GWS Giants (4-4, 8th)
Fremantle (4-4, 9th)
Port Adelaide (4-4, 12th)
Carlton (3-5, 13th)
Sydney (3-5, 14th)
Melbourne (3-5, 15th)
North Melbourne (1-7, 17th)
West Coast (0-8, 18th)
