Crusaders captain David Havili has confirmed the 2026 season was his last in red and black, with the veteran midfielder set to continue his career in Japan.
Havili departs as one of the most respected figures in Crusaders history, having played more than 150 matches for the club, captained the side, and represented the All Blacks in 32 Tests.
The 31-year-old said the decision to move on came with a sense of pride and gratitude after spending around 15 years with the organisation.
“I definitely feel like it’s time for me to move on with the next generation coming through. The legacy is in great hands,” said Havili.

Reflecting on his time with the Crusaders, Havili said he was proud of what the team had achieved during his tenure, including helping return the club to the top of Super Rugby and leading the side to a title.
“To be able to live out my dream here for around 15 years and be part of this legacy with some of the best players that have ever come through this club, it’s been an extreme honour,” he said.
Havili will now take up a new opportunity in Japan but says his connection to the Crusaders will remain.
“To the fans, the organisation, past and present players; thank you so much for standing with me and being a part of my journey, I’ll never forget it. I’ll always be a Crusader.”
