Xavier Numia has revealed the emotional toll of his long injury lay-off before finally earning an All Blacks opportunity.
The 27-year-old Hurricanes prop had built strong momentum during last year’s domestic season before a knee injury forced him to the sidelines, despite his name continuing to be mentioned for international selection.
However, he finally made his All Blacks debut against France in July and will line up for a third time in the black jersey in Sunday's clash against the Springboks.

Numia admitted the setback left him in a difficult place, but said the support of his family and coaches helped him through.
“It was a pretty tough time” just wondering “what if,” he told Sport Nation.
“I was pretty fortunate and lucky to have a really good support system. My partner, her family, my family, they got me through a pretty dark place.”
Hurricanes coaching staff also helped Numia rediscover his enjoyment of rugby and encouraged him to stay true to himself.
“The coaches at the Canes helped me as well, just getting into loving my rugby and just being who I want to be on and off the field.”

That renewed confidence allowed Numia to play with greater freedom and ultimately secure his place in the All Blacks squad.
“They just allowed me to be who I wanted to be off the field, which obviously led to me playing how I wanted to play the game.
“I'm just really grateful for everyone that's helped me get to this place where I'm at now, because it truly meant everything when I got named.”
