Pfitzner: People tipped Angel Capital purely on hope in the Orr
“People were tipping Angel Capital on hope.”
That’s the statement that Miles Pfitzner made when reflecting upon the C.F. Orr Stakes, which the favourite Jimmysstar won by one length, defeating the stallion who finished second.
Angel Capital was the second favourite behind the Ciaron Maher-trained chestnut in the Group 1 on Saturday, after recently getting bettered by Jimmysstar in The Everest earlier this spring.
While Pfitzner was adamant that punters only backed the Chris Waller-trained four-year-old based off hope, Tom Haylock couldn’t agree with that claim.
“No, there's a bit to that,” Haylock responded on SENTrack & RSN’s Layback with Betfair.
“Angel Capital had what appeared to be the better setup, right?
“Jimmysstar had a Grand Final in The Everest, then went to the other race, the Russell Balding. So, he had two Grand Finals and then backed up again.
“For a horse that historically sprinted best fresh, you can see why there was some resistance.
“Whereas Angel Capital was fantastic in The Everest, they said we need to win this Grand Final, this is our Grand Final, we'll have a freshen up and attack the (C.F. Orr Stakes).
“The setups were different, and you could make a case for Angel Capital.”
When reflecting upon the race itself, Haylock admitted that it wasn’t a complete smashing by Jimmysstar.
“He ran a good race, he just doesn't have tactical speed, and that's where the race fell down,” Haylock said.
“He settled behind Jimmysstar, Jimmysstar jumped better than him, jumped really well, almost too well.
“So, the length and a half or two lengths that he (Jimmysstar) settled in front of Angel Capital, that was a race.
“Angel Capital loomed up, had to work too hard to get close to him, and then Jimmy kicked again, so there's not a lot between them, let's be honest.
“They were both soft on the line because they realised that that was their positions, but there's not a lot (between them).
“Angel can beat Jimmy if he gets the right circumstance.”
