Silver Ferns captain Ameliaranne Ekenasio has announced she will not be available for the 2025 international netball season.
Since her debut in 2014, Ekenasio has been a key figure in the black dress, earning 79 caps and playing a central role in New Zealand’s 2019 Netball World Cup victory.
She led the team to Constellation Cup titles in both 2021 and 2024, as well as multiple Taini Jamison Trophy wins, cementing her place as one of the most respected leaders in the game.
Known for her composed leadership and accuracy from range, she captained the Ferns with poise and strength, even returning to the role following the birth of her second child.
In confirming her decision, Ekenasio said it was one that took time and deep consideration.
“This wasn’t an easy call to make, but it’s something I’ve thought about a lot. Right now, I know I need to step back and give myself space - to rest my mind, my body, and my spirit. It’s been such a rewarding journey, and I’ve cherished every moment wearing the black dress. But this is the right move for me at this stage.”
“It’s been a huge privilege to represent Aotearoa and lead this incredible group of wāhine. There’s so much emerging strength in the Ferns programme, and I’m genuinely excited to see what’s next for the team.”
Her absence now creates uncertainty in the Ferns shooting circle. With Ekenasio unavailable, questions remain around who will step up to lead the attack.
There is added intrigue following yesterday’s shift in eligibility rules, which could see star shooter Grace Nweke return to the international arena. Her potential inclusion would bring a powerful presence back into the circle, but nothing has been confirmed, leaving selectors with big decisions ahead.
The question of who will captain the team in Ekenasio’s absence also remains open.
Silver Ferns head coach Dame Noeline Taurua offered her full support for Ekenasio’s decision, acknowledging the immense demands placed on elite athletes.
“I’ve always supported athletes in making decisions that are right for them. I fully respect Ameliaranne’s choice to step away from the international stage at this time.
"As a mother and wife, supporting a growing family, alongside the demands of being a high-performance athlete and carrying significant leadership responsibilities, the load can be immense. I personally understand that sometimes being everything to everyone simply isn’t sustainable.
"There’s no doubt she will be deeply missed this year, her leadership, presence and unique skillsets are irreplaceable. At the same time, I truly admire her selfless decision. It reflects a deep understanding of the commitment required to be a Silver Fern, and her integrity to step back when she can’t give it her all right now.
“I look forward to welcoming Ameliaranne back when she is ready.”
Originally from Queensland and of Ngāpuhi heritage, Ekenasio moved to Wellington in 2014 to join the Central Pulse.
Her career has been shaped by resilience - bouncing back from injuries, personal challenges, and the demands of motherhood to become one of the game’s most respected figures and a natural leader within the Silver Ferns.
