Why Payne's legacy at Broncos is secured...even if he defects
Corey Parker believes that Payne Haas is already an all-time great of the Brisbane Broncos, even if he were to leave for an opportunity with R360.
The star prop, who has played 142 games for the side, has once again claimed the Broncos’ Paul Morgan Medal this season following the side’s premiership success.
This is now the sixth of his career, which sees him enter rarified air, becoming the only Brisbane player to have achieved the feat.
With his impact on the field, he has now drawn interest from upstart Rugby Union competition, R360, which has reportedly offered him a $3 million (per year) contract to join the rebel competition.
Responding to a text message about how Haas’ legacy at the Broncos would be impacted if he were to defect to R360, Parker believes that the 25-year-old is already secured as one of the greats of the club.
“Payne Haas, in my opinion, is already an all-time great,” he said on SENQ Breakfast.
“He’s a six-time Paul Morgan Medal winner, and he’s now won a competition.
“So, I’ve always said there are two forms of currency in professional sport, money and also competitions…well, he’s done both.
“So the question will now be, where is his next challenge, and this could potentially open doors for more than just Payne.”
Parker is also of the opinion that if Haas switches codes, he would likely be quickly adapt, having played the sport as a junior.
“I tell you what, it wouldn’t be hard to learn (for him),” he explained.
“And that’s no disrespect to Rugby; he’s an elite athlete.”
The NRL have come out and said that any player who is to sign with the competition would be banned for 10 years.
R360 are expected to announce their first signings for the competition in due course, with the league being scheduled to start next year.
