Meninga: I'd punch myself if we didn't speak to Tino
Mal Meninga says he would punch himself in the face if he didn’t take the time to speak with Tino Fa'asuamaleaui’s management, should he put himself on the open market.
Reflecting on the departure of Des Hasler who was sacked from the Gold Coast Titans earlier this week, Meninga was asked about the club’s culture having previously worked there.
With Josh Hannay coming in as the new coach, steadying the ship and having difficult conversations about the set up of the club needs to be prioritised.
Also top of Hannay’s list will be the future of Tino who is believed to have activated an exit clause in his contract.
“Almost every time the coach is the one that is moved on,” Meninga told SENQ Breakfast of this week’s news.
“It’s the $20 million question why it hasn’t worked given the talent and it comes down to the environment; are players happy there and what is provided for you to grow as a player and person?
“What are they providing players on and off the field? Is it a safe place to go?
“You need to feel valued, you feel good about being there and you want to be your best.
“It all comes down to the eco system of the club.
“Everyone has to take responsibility it’s not just one person. A big conversation needs to be had by the club – certainly the leadership group. They need accountability.”
Titans captain Tino has not shied away from his role when it comes to taking accountability in the wake of Hasler’s departure.
The club has been anchored to the bottom of the ladder for much of the season and will end with the wooden spoon.
Whether a change in coach is enough to keep the 25-year-old at the club remains to be seen and Meninga, who will coach the Perth Bears as the NRL’s 18th franchise from 2027, has outlined his pitch.
“We will talk to Tino’s management if he’s going to put himself on the market,” the Immortal said.
“I’d give myself a few upper cuts if I didn’t talk to them but I will be one of many.
“We’ve got to have an extraordinary sell to Tino. Get him excited about the environment, that he gets well looked after and that he can play his best footy.
“Chase his goals in life, they’re the things you have to provide for players.”
