The moment that turned the game in Brisbane's favour
Was the overturning of Tui Kamikamica’s try in the 42nd minute the game-changing moment that saw the Broncos claim the first NRL premiership in 19 years?
Well, according to the SEN League commentary team featuring Joel Caine, Brett Kimmorley, and Scott Sattler, it just might have been.
At this point of the game, the Storm had a 10-point lead following a strong first half.
And within the first couple of minutes of the second half, Melbourne had managed to get the ball just 10 metres from their try line.
Halfway through the set, Cameron Munster managed to get a grubber kick off that beat Kobe Hetherington, with Kamikamica getting past and appearing to have scored Melbourne’s fifth try for the match to give the Storm a game-high 14-point lead.
However, Reece Walsh managed to make an impact with his late bump, which was enough to see the prop lose control of the ball, resulting in the bunker overturning Grant Atkins’ initial call of a try.
Following that try being disallowed, the Broncos experienced a massive shift in momentum, going on to score the next three tries, which gave them the lead which they held onto for the remainder of the match.
And as the Broncos took the lead, it left the three men wondering whether that missed try would be the moment that the Storm would regret from this match.
Kimmorley: “We spoke about moments and opportunities.”
K: “(If) Tui nearly scored down there…
Sattler and K: “That’s the Grand Final.”
Caine: “That is, was it Herschelle Gibbs when they dropped the World Cup?”
“That was the moment there.”
K: “22-12, they score, they go 28-12.”
“And since then, Reynolds has kicked the ball out on the full, and the Broncos have hit go mode.”
“All the ball, all the possession.”
