“Madge has got us firing”: Reynolds praises Maguire's coaching performance
Brisbane captain Adam Reynolds has given some insight into how his side was able to come back from 10 points down at halftime to claim the Broncos’ first NRL Premiership in 19 years.
Having signed with the club in 2022 when the Broncos were at a low point, the experienced halfback has been central in their rise back up the ladder under both Kevin Walters and Michael Maguire.
And while he was unable to win in 2023, the 35-year-old would get his redemption and claimed a long-awaited second premiership ring following their 26-22 win over the Melbourne Storm on Sunday.
Speaking post-game with Brisbane Broncos legend Corey Parker, Reynolds was proud of how his team fought their way back into the game to take the lead and hold onto it.
“Man, I love this club,” he told SEN’s Broncos Radio.
“It’s so special, I mean, the fight, the resilience the side showed throughout that second half to come back the way they did, not only tonight but the last two finals.
“It’s quite incredible.”
The result is even more special considering that Reynolds has managed to win with his former coach, Michael ‘Madge’ Maguire.
The captain and coach share a special connection, having worked together at South Sydney when the Rabbitohs broke their 43-year premiership drought in 2014.
And 11 years later, they have managed to get back to the top of the NRL world once again, with Reynolds noting that Maguire’s ability to get the team firing and his previous experience from this year's finals series went a long way to being able to overrun the Storm in the second half.
‘We’ve been here before,” Reynolds said.
“We’ve done it. The belief is amazing. Madge has got us firing.
‘We knew at the back half of the game that we were going to come home strong, and we knew we would get our moments and we needed to take them.”
Reynolds also confirmed that he sustained a calf injury, forcing him to leave the field in the 49th minute and not return.
“I tore my calf,” he stated.
“I had it coming in the last week, so I’m glad I could get through.”
