Alexander: Is $110m stadium agreement enough for the Tigers?
Greg Alexander thinks that the $110 million provided to the Wests Tigers in their latest agreement will not be enough to service both of their spiritual homes.
On Monday, the Wests Tigers announced that they have agreed to a partnership with the Inner West and Campbelltown City Councils, which will see them continue to have home games at Leichardt Oval and Campbelltown Sports Stadium until 2041.
The agreement will see $110 million contributed from various government stakeholders, which will see both grounds redeveloped within that 15-year duration to improve amenities and increase capacity.
In a statement from the club, Tigers CEO Shane Richardson said that this deal would help the club overcome the issues it faces by being a merged entity.
“We face a unique set of challenges as a joint-venture club, and it was vitally important to ensure this strategy supported the long-term financial sustainability of the Wests Tigers, while maintaining a strong connection to the communities we represent,” he announced.
“We set a very clear vision for the club, and this strategy is a significant part of that. It lays the platform for an exciting period for our members and supporters, and we look forward to sharing more developments on these projects as they are finalised.”
According to Alexander, he believes that the money provided may not be enough to increase the bottom line for the Tigers, unless they can get corporate facilities into the suburban grounds.
“I’m a fan of suburban grounds,” Alexander explained on SEN 1170’s Breakfast.
“But the money that is promised… the money won’t do anything really to improve much at either ground.
“It certainly won’t change the number of people you can fit in...if you can only fit 16,000 people in.
“If you had a stadium that could hold 24-25,000 and you got that consistently, that’s pretty good.
“As long as you have the corporate facilities to go with that.
“But if you split $110 million across two grounds, it’s not much. The cost of building these days is astronomical and outrageous.”
Tigers’ fans will have to wait until next year to see their NRL/W side play at Leichardt Oval, while the women’s team has one more match at Campbelltown Stadium.
The redevelopment of Leichhardt Oval will begin after the conclusion of the 2026 NRL season, while it will be 2028 before construction begins at Campbelltown.
