Peters enhances NRL chances following Super League triumph
Willie Peters has only strengthened his case to become an NRL head coach, having now taken Hull KR to a Super League title overnight.
At Old Trafford, the Rovers managed to avenge last year’s grand final loss against Wigan by defeating them 24-6 with a dominant second half to claim their first ever Super League title.
It is a special win for Hull as this victory, alongside the Challenge Cup win in June and the League Leaders Shield, would see them achieve a treble for the first time in club history.
Speaking post-game, the former South Sydney halfback said that he was proud of his team’s efforts to go one step better this season.
"The first word that comes to mind is obviously 'proud'," he explained.
"These players, the people, the performance, it's an honour to fight tooth and nail and to win that.
"It started a long time ago for us. It started our first day back at training. We spoke around last year, what happened last year.
"Tonight was on the flip side. These boys were the ones that were fighting. Absolutely amazing."
It was also a special night for legendary Sydney Roosters' front rower Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, who almost missed the match due to a suspension for a high tackle in the semi-final.
But after that decision was overturned, he now finishes up his Rugby League career by adding yet another trophy to his career accolades.
Having now delivered Hull their first treble in their history, it will only aid Peters’ case to become an NRL coach, with the 46-year-old acknowledging that as a goal of his.
Already, he has been in contention for some NRL head coaching roles, which included the Newcastle job, for which he decided not to go through the interview process due to his commitments with Hull.
But as he explained earlier in the week, his focus remains on the now to ensure that he can do the best job properly to eventually get that opportunity when he’s ready.
“In my goals, it is certainly to coach in the NRL. I’d love to do that,” Peters told SEN 1170’s Breakfast on Thursday.
“But one thing I’ve learnt when I was younger… was probably thinking too far ahead.
“I know it can be cliché, but it is. I worry about the now and getting that right, as I know in coaching and Rugby League, it can change pretty quickly.
“So if I’m not concentrating on the now, then I don’t do my job properly, and then I’ll never be able to achieve my goals.”
His contract with Hull KR does not officially conclude until 2028. But it is well within the realm of possibility that he could be in the NRL sooner than that.
