How the Panthers have ‘redefined’ what is possible
Jimmy Smith has lauded the Penrith Panthers’ dynasty after their chances of a five-peat are officially over.
After having won their last 14 finals games and the previous four premierships, their streak has ended following their 16-14 loss to the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.
While the Panthers would have wished that their season had been extended for another week, what they have achieved is very unlikely to be replicated, considering the number of rules in place to prevent dynasties.
With their performance, Smith is all but in awe of what they have done, believing that they have redefined what is possible in the NRL world.
“We can look at it now in its entirety, right that period of time that the Penrith Panthers made,” Smith said on SEN 1170’s Afternoons.
“So, 2019, I’m pretty sure they missed out on finals. 2020, they stormed home in the Grand Final, where they fall short.
“And then they win four in a row, each in a different fashion and then fall short in a prelim.
“So, across a six-year span, they have won four premierships and appeared in five Grand Finals.
“The Penrith Panthers have redefined what is possible in a salary cap era in the NRL. No one thought they can do that.
“No one thought any club could do that. They did. They are truly a great side.”
The NRL Grand Final will take place on October 5, with the Melbourne Storm set to take on the Brisbane Broncos.
SEN will have live coverage of that match as well as the NRLW Grand Final from Accor Stadium from 12pm AEDT.
Kick-off will take place at 7:30pm.
