Tabuai-Fidow's Kangaroos career could be over after knee injury
Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow has reportedly suffered a Grade 3 MCL tear, ruling him out of Australia’s end-of-season Ashes Tour.
Tabuai-Fidow suffered the injury in the Dolphins 62-24 victory over the Canberra Raiders, limping from the field 60 minutes in.
The centre was electric in his time on the field, scoring three tries in pursuit of Mark Nawaqanitawase’s lead as top try scorer, and his injury is a major blow for new coach Kevvie Walters.
Tabuai-Fidow was almost a certain selection for the Kangaroos to line up at centre, particularly given his form in last season’s Pacific Championships, with the injury opening the door for a number of players to return to the representative fold.
It could also mean the end of Tabuai-Fidow’s career in the green and gold.
Speculation has swirled for months around the representative futures of Tabuai-Fidow, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Payne Haas and who the trio would elect to represent on the international stage.
Haas announced his commitment to Samoa, while Tabuai-Fidow was expected to represent Australia in the Ashes before switching to Samoa for the 2026 World Cup.
SEN’s Bryan Fletcher believes the injury to Tabuai-Fidow should open the door for a Roosters’ rookie to debut.
“Let’s get him in there, Mark Nawaqanitawase,” Fletcher said on SEN 1170 Drive.
“Dual international. There’s only a couple of us.”
Other options for coach Walters include Tom Trbojevic, Latrell Mitchell, and Kotoni Staggs, while Robert Toia, Gehamat Shibasaki, and Matt Burton could be outside chances.
