"Nothing sinister": Freo defend umpire mugshots tactic
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir insists there is “nothing sinister” about the “mugshots” of umpires pinned to the wall of their dressing room.
During the club’s clash against North Melbourne last week, Fox Sports cameras captured footage of the images of four on-field umpires images on the wall.
Asked to explain the “tactic” after his side’s dominant 16.8 (104) to 9.9 (63) win over Essendon on Thursday, Longmuir said he was amazed it had made headlines.
“It wasn’t a specific tactic – someone just decided to put ‘em up somewhere different,” he said.
“It is astonishing it got picked up last week and it was made something of.
“We’ve been doing it for four years I reckon.
“There’s nothing sinister about it.
“We want our players and staff to understand who is umpiring the game – it’s not to get a benefit or the wrong way or right way.”
Luke Jackson starred in the Dockers’ fifth consecutive victory with 21 disposals, 10 clearances and three goals in the 41-point rout over an injury-cursed Bombers.
With their season now 5-9 St Kilda is next up for Fremantle.
